Naturopathy (Naturopathic Medicine)

A system of disease prevention and treatment that avoids drugs and surgery. Naturopathy is based on the use of natural agents such as air, water, light, heat, and massage to help the body heal itself. It also uses herbal products, nutrition, acupuncture, and aromatherapy as forms of treatment.

Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (Induction Chemotherapy, Primary Chemotherapy, Preoperative Chemotherapy)

Chemotherapy used as a first treatment. Often used for large or locally-advanced cancers to shrink tumors before surgery.

Neoadjuvant Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy used as a first treatment. Often used for large or locally-advanced cancers to shrink tumors before surgery.

Neoadjuvant Therapy (Preoperative Therapy)

Chemotherapy or hormone therapy used as a first treatment. Often used for large or locally-advanced cancers to shrink tumors before surgery.

Neoplasia

Abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth which can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer).

Neoplasm

An abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide more than they should or do not die when they should. Neoplasms may be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Benign neoplasms may grow large but do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues or other parts of the body. Malignant neoplasms can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. They can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Also called tumor.

Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy

A breast reconstruction surgery that removes the tumor and margins (edges of the tissue) as well as the fat and other tissue in the breast, but leaves the nipple and areola as is.

Node-Negative (Lymph Node-Negative)

Cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes. See Lymph Node Status in L.

Node-Positive (Lymph Node-Positive)

Cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes. See Lymph Node Status in L.

Non-Invasive

In medicine, it is a procedure that do not use tools that break the skin or physically enter the body. In cancer, it means that the cancer has not spread outside the tissue in which it started.

Nonpalpable

Describes a breast lump or abnormal area that cannot be felt but can be seen on an imaging test (such as a mammogram).

Normal Tissue

Tissue without cancer cells or other alterations.

Nucleus

In biology, the structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes. The nucleus has a membrane around it, and is where RNA is made from the DNA in the chromosomes.
